How to do a hazard assessment
Hazard assessment is the core duty in Canadian OHS law — Alberta, for example, requires hazard assessments in writing, and every jurisdiction expects hazards to be identified and controlled before work begins. The method is consistent: pick the task, break it into a sequence of basic steps, identify the hazard in each step (struck-by, caught-in, falls, electrical, chemical/WHMIS, ergonomic, environmental), and choose controls using the hierarchy of controls — eliminate, substitute, engineering controls, administrative controls and safe work procedures, and personal protective equipment last. Review the assessment with the workers who do the job, and revisit it after any incident or change. Many sites also complete a short field-level hazard assessment (FLHA) at the start of each shift.
