Electrical work in Australia: licensing and compliance by state

Electrical work in Australia is one of the most tightly licensed trades, and unlike the White Card there is no single national card — licensing is administered by each state and territory regulator. Doing electrical work without the correct licence is a serious offence and, just as importantly, a serious safety risk.

Who needs a licence

Anyone carrying out electrical installation work needs an electrical worker's licence or a contractor's licence issued by the regulator in their state — for example NSW Fair Trading, Energy Safe Victoria, or the Queensland Electrical Safety Office. Contractors who run a business and take on work need a contractor licence in addition to the individual worker licences of their staff.

Working across borders

Automatic mutual recognition (AMR) lets many licence holders work in another state on the basis of their home licence, but the detail varies and high-risk categories can be excluded. If your crews move between states, check the current mutual-recognition position rather than assuming a licence travels.

The safety obligations

A licence is not the end of it. Electrical work must be tested and, where required, certified; leads and portable equipment must be tested and tagged; and safe isolation (test before touch) is fundamental. Keeping licences, test-and-tag records and certificates of compliance organised is what turns a licence into demonstrable compliance.
