The Australian evidence chain for a hire
The strongest protection in vehicle hire is a complete, connected record of each hire. Complys shares its global Self-Drive engine for the parts that are the same everywhere — the agreement, the condition and damage evidence, the audit trail — but the identity and licence step is deliberately Australian, because the UK’s national share-code check simply doesn’t exist here.
- 1. Identity & licence capture. Capture the hirer’s identity and physical or digital licence, and record their consent.
- 2. Verification (Australian). Confirm the licence is genuine and valid via the national Document Verification Service — there is no live national entitlement/points check, so where needed a consent-based state driver-history report can be attached.
- 3. Agreement. Present and e-sign the hire agreement — bond, excess, additional driver.
- 4. Condition out → hire → condition in. Timestamped condition and photo evidence at check-out and check-in.
- 5. Damage & evidence pack. Log damage against the vehicle and export the whole hire as one evidence pack with a full audit trail.
Why the licence step is different in Australia
In the UK an operator can pull a driver’s entitlements and penalty points live from the DVLA using a share code. Australia has no national equivalent — driver licensing is issued and administered by each state and territory. The national Document Verification Service confirms a licence document is genuine and valid (an identity check), but it doesn’t return driving history or entitlements, and history reports are obtained per state with the driver’s consent.
That absence is exactly why an operator needs a system: to standardise identity verification, licence capture, consent and condition evidence across states, so every hire is defensible even though there’s no single button to press. Complys is built for that reality — it will never claim a “DVLA-style” check it can’t deliver.

Is this car rental or vehicle hire software?
Both — in Australia the words are used interchangeably. Complys runs car hire, van and ute hire and general vehicle rental on one platform, built around the evidence that protects an operator: who the hirer was, the agreement they signed, and the vehicle's condition out and back.
Can it check a hirer's driving licence like the UK?
No — and it's important we're accurate about this. Australia has no national, real-time licence-check equivalent to the UK's DVLA share code; licences are issued and administered by each state. What Complys does is capture the hirer's identity and physical or digital licence, support verification that the licence is genuine and valid via the national Document Verification Service, and store the evidence and the hirer's consent against the hire. Where an operator obtains a consent-based state driver-history report, that can be attached too.
How does it help with a damage dispute?
The same way as everywhere: a consistent, timestamped condition record at check-out and check-in, with photos, tied to the hire, the hirer and the signed agreement — exportable as one evidence pack. This part is the global Complys Self-Drive engine and works the same in Australia.
What Australian terms does it use?
The Australian ones — hire and rental, hire car, bond, excess (not deductible), damage waiver, one-way hire, additional driver. The compliance/evidence journey uses Australian inputs rather than assuming UK services exist.

Does it suit campervan, 4WD or ute hire?
The core evidence journey applies to all of them. A dedicated campervan/RV hire page — a large and distinctive Australian market — is planned as a later addition rather than part of this first release.
