Gas engineering compliance records to manage

Gas is one of the few trades where registration is a legal requirement in its own right. Complys keeps each of these current and ready to share, and we've labelled what is a legal requirement, what is a competence route, and what clients ask for commercially, because they are not the same thing.

Legal requirement
Gas Safe Register, Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998

A business carrying out gas work within the scope of the regulations must be registered with the Gas Safe Register, and the engineers doing that work must be appropriately qualified and registered to work under it. Carrying out in-scope gas work without registration is a criminal offence, and registration is renewed annually. Complys tracks Gas Safe registration and renewals and stores the gas safety records you issue.

Competence route
ACS, Accredited Certification Scheme

ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) is the main industry-recognised route many engineers use to demonstrate competence for Gas Safe work categories, for example CCN1 (domestic core), CENWAT (boilers and water heaters), CKR1 (cookers) and HTR1 (fires), with reassessment normally every 5 years. Gas Safe can also recognise other approved competence certificates. Complys tracks every competence qualification and its expiry per engineer.

Legal duty
Landlord gas safety, annual check & record

For rented homes, landlords must arrange an annual gas safety check on relevant appliances and flues by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and keep the record. Complys stores landlord gas safety records against the property and flags renewals. Gas safety certificate tracking →

Related registrations
OFTEC, F-Gas / REFCOM, IGEM

Oil-fired work has its own scheme (OFTEC), refrigerant work its own (F-Gas / REFCOM), and IGEM supports the wider gas industry. Many engineers hold several. Complys tracks Gas Safe, OFTEC, F-Gas/REFCOM and other certifications side by side.

Accreditation & client expectations
CHAS, SMAS and SSIP

Not legal requirements, but commercial clients and principal contractors commonly ask for them before you get on an approved list. Complys keeps these certificates current and shareable. CHAS readiness checker →

Legal duty
CDM 2015, contractor duties

On construction projects you have duties to plan, manage and monitor your own work and to coordinate with others on site. Complys holds the RAMS, inductions and records that help you evidence it. CDM duty checker →

This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Always check the current primary sources for your specific work: HSE L56 (Gas Safety), Gas Safe Register (rules of registration), ACS scheme rules (BPEC, supplementary).

Gas engineering compliance FAQs

Is Gas Safe registration legally required?

Broadly yes: a business carrying out gas work within the scope of the regulations must be registered with the Gas Safe Register, and the engineers doing that work must be appropriately qualified and registered to work under the business. It is a criminal offence to carry out in-scope gas work without registration. Gas Safe replaced the older CORGI scheme. Complys tracks your registration and each engineer's competence qualifications.

What ACS qualifications do gas engineers need?

ACS is the main industry-recognised route, with separate qualifications for each type of work, for example CCN1 (domestic core), CENWAT (boilers and water heaters), CKR1 (cookers) and HTR1 (fires), normally reassessed every 5 years. Gas Safe can also recognise other approved competence certificates. Complys tracks every qualification and its expiry.

What is the difference between Gas Safe and OFTEC?

Gas Safe covers gas appliances; OFTEC covers oil-fired heating (kerosene boilers, oil tanks). Many heating engineers hold both for dual-fuel capability. Complys can track Gas Safe, OFTEC, F-Gas, REFCOM and other certifications side by side.

What insurance does a gas engineer need?

Gas work carries significant liability (leaks, CO poisoning, fire). Where employers' liability insurance is required (if you have employees), the statutory minimum cover is £5m, though £10m is commonly offered. Public liability and professional indemnity levels depend on your work, client contracts and risk profile. Complys alerts you before any certificate expires.
