Joinery & carpentry compliance records to manage

Complys keeps each of these current and ready to share, and we've labelled what is a legal duty, what is a competence or site-access requirement, and what clients ask for commercially, because they are not the same thing.

Legal duty
Wood dust, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) 2002

Wood dust is a COSHH hazard that can cause asthma and, in the case of hardwood dust, cancer (HSE). Exposure must be assessed and controlled below the workplace exposure limits (hardwood dust 3 mg/m³, softwood dust 5 mg/m³, 8-hour average). Where local exhaust ventilation (LEV) is used to control it, the LEV must be thoroughly examined and tested at suitable intervals, at least every 14 months for most equipment. Complys keeps COSHH assessments, LEV records and training together. COSHH checker →

Legal duty
Woodworking machinery, PUWER 1998

Woodworking machines and power tools must be suitable, guarded, maintained and used only by people who have been adequately trained, including specific training for machines such as circular saws, and for abrasive wheels. Complys keeps machine records and operator training against each worker.

Competence & site access
CSCS, NVQ (Wood Occupations), CITB test

Not universal statutory cards, but commercial sites routinely require them as evidence of competence and for site access: a CSCS card (usually backed by an NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Wood Occupations, site carpentry, bench joinery or shopfitting) and the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. Complys tracks every card and qualification with expiry alerts.

Accreditation & client expectations
BWF membership, CHAS and SMAS

Not legal requirements, but shopfitting and fit-out main contractors commonly ask for them before you get on an approved list. Complys keeps these certificates current and shareable. CHAS readiness checker →

Legal duty
CDM 2015, manual handling & work at height

On site you have contractor duties under CDM 2015 to plan, manage and monitor your work, plus general duties around manual handling and, for first-fix and installation at height, the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Complys holds the RAMS, inductions and records that help you evidence them. CDM duty checker →

This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Always check the current primary sources for your specific work: HSE woodworking (wood dust), HSE COSHH, HSE PUWER.

Joinery & carpentry compliance FAQs

What qualifications do joiners need on UK sites?

There is no single statutory 'joiner's card'. Commercial sites typically require a CSCS card, usually backed by an NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Wood Occupations (site carpentry, bench joinery or shopfitting), plus the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, as evidence of competence and for site access rather than as legal requirements in themselves. Complys tracks every card and qualification.

Do joiners need dust extraction or specific training?

Wood dust is a COSHH hazard, HSE says hardwood dust can cause cancer, and wood dust can cause asthma. Exposure must be assessed and controlled below the workplace exposure limits (hardwood 3 mg/m³, softwood 5 mg/m³). Where LEV (dust extraction) is used to control it, the LEV must be thoroughly examined and tested at least every 14 months for most equipment, and workers should be trained on wood-dust risks. Complys stores COSHH assessments, LEV records and training.

What insurance does a joinery company need?

Where employers' liability insurance is required (if you have employees), the statutory minimum cover is £5m, though £10m is commonly offered. Public liability, tools/equipment and goods-in-transit cover for site-installed bespoke joinery depend on your work, client contracts and risk profile. Complys tracks every certificate with expiry alerts.

How does Complys help joinery businesses win shopfitting and fit-out work?

Shopfitting and fit-out main contractors require documented compliance before adding joiners to approved supplier lists. Complys consolidates your insurance, accreditations, CSCS cards, RAMS, LEV records and training matrix into a shareable profile sent in one click.
