What is COSHH?
COSHH — the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 — requires employers to prevent or control exposure to hazardous substances. That covers chemicals, products, dust, fumes, mists, vapours and biological agents created or used in your work. It means identifying the hazards, assessing the risk, putting controls in place, and keeping them working.
Is a safety data sheet the same as a COSHH assessment?
No — and this trips a lot of businesses up. A safety data sheet (SDS) comes from the supplier and describes the product. A COSHH assessment is your own document that looks at how the substance is actually used in your work, who's exposed, and what controls you'll apply. Filing the SDS is not a COSHH assessment.
