Acids and alkalis are used to clean brickwork, remove mortar, descale and clean plant. They are corrosive and cause serious burns to skin and eyes, and give off harmful fumes.

Control measures (hierarchy of control)

Controls should be applied in order — eliminate or substitute first, then engineering controls, then PPE as the last line.

  • Substitute for a less hazardous product where possible
  • Always add acid to water, never water to acid, and never mix products
  • Ventilate the area; avoid enclosed spaces where fumes build up
  • Use the correct dilution from the label; have water to hand for washing
  • Provide eyewash and washing facilities

PPE & RPE

  • Chemical-resistant gloves and apron
  • Face shield or goggles
  • Suitable boots
  • RPE where fumes cannot be controlled

First aid

  • Skin: rinse with plenty of water and remove contaminated clothing
  • Eyes: irrigate with clean water for at least 20 minutes and get urgent medical help
  • Fumes: move to fresh air

Workplace exposure limit (WEL)

Limits depend on the specific chemical - for example hydrochloric acid has a short-term exposure limit of 5 ppm. Always check the Workplace Exposure Limit in EH40 and the product safety data sheet for the acid or alkali you are using.
