Control measures (hierarchy of control)

Controls should be applied in order — eliminate or substitute first, then engineering controls, then PPE as the last line.

  • Eliminate idling; switch engines off when not in use
  • Use electric or battery plant where possible
  • Extract exhaust at source or duct it outside in enclosed areas
  • Ensure good ventilation; keep pedestrians away from exhausts
  • Fit and maintain particulate filters on plant

PPE & RPE

  • RPE only as a last resort where engineering controls cannot fully control exposure

First aid

  • Move to fresh air
  • Get medical help for anyone with breathing difficulty or signs of carbon monoxide exposure

Workplace exposure limit (WEL)

There is no Workplace Exposure Limit for diesel exhaust as a whole, and because it is carcinogenic exposure must be reduced as low as reasonably practicable. Elemental carbon is sometimes monitored as an indicator.
